Principles of business coaching |
| |
Our approach to personal coaching and leadership coaching was developed over 8 years and is highly suitable to the business world. It is direct, solution focused and perfect for coaching high functioning individuals. |
| |
| The model draws on an understanding of the brain, combined with positive psychology, systems theory, learning theory and change theory. |
| |
| The five core principles of Leadership Coaching are: |
| |
| » Self directed learning |
Personal Coaching helps people think better. The person being coached is the expert in their work - the Personal coach uses a questioning approach to help the person find their own answers.
|
| |
| » Solutions focus |
| Coaching is not about what's wrong and trying to fix it. Coaching focuses firmly on solutions - where are you now, where do you want to be and how can you get there. |
| |
| » Positive feedback |
| Criticism shrinks our confidence and stops us taking action. Encouragement and belief does the opposite. Coaching is a way of delivering encouragement and belief in people that really moves them forward.
|
| |
| » Systematic approach to delivering behavioural change |
| Real change takes time, commitment and focus. Coaching is effective because it provides a step by step and systematic approach that slowly produces real change. |
| |
| » Stretch |
| People perform at their best when they are appropriately challenged. Too much stretch causes stress, too little produces boredom.
In coaching, we focus on empowering the individual to develop their own answers, maintain a firm focus on solutions and then challenge them to be the best they can be. |

| About Coaching |
| |
» What is coaching?
- Coaching is a new popular professional service that has been in existence for about ten years. The philosophy of coaching is based on fundamental human principles of integrity, accountability, respect, and a belief in human potential.
Coaching is a goal-oriented, results-focused professional alliance that helps clients bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.
Coaches:
-
Help people discover their goals and then reach those goals quickly
- Ask their clients to do more than they would have done by themselves
- Focus their clients on the actions and behaviours that will produce significant results fast
- Provide the structure, tools and perspective to help clients accomplish more in their lives
» What else does coaching do?
- Coaching;
- Motivates clients to stretch themselves
- Encourages clients to be their best
- Challenges clients to think bigger and realize their full potential
- Dares clients to take more risks
- Is a supportive structure available for people who want to produce results quickly and easily
- Alters how clients think, feel and behave and so they begin to appreciate their own greatness.
Coaching achieves this by;
- Setting powerful, compelling goals so clients are clear about the direction they are heading
- Providing the structure to help clients stick to them, even when the going gets tough
- Focusing clients on where they are now, where they want to be, the best way to get there, and the action steps they are going to take, right now
- Helping clients think laterally to create lots of options, and then think deeply about the choices they wish to make
- Giving clients a step-by-step process that avoids the overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to start
- Setting deadlines to give the whole process more urgency and importance
- Working within a 12-week time frame; enough time to complete the project, but short enough to stay focused and motivated
- Encourages clients to identify old obstructive habits, drop them, and develop new productive habits instead
- Asking clients the hard questions and holding them to what they say they want and will do
- Helping clients to stay committed to themselves and their goals
» What tools do coaches use when coaching ?
- Typically coaches draw on their experience as well as their coaching skills and create their own toolbag to use when coaching. The most common tools that coaches use are assessment programs and checklists, language distinctions and coaching models.
Coaching is more than just motivation and support. The use of tools can help clients to understand themselves better and as a result make more effective choices.
» Is Results Workplace Coaching certified with anyone?
- Yes. Results is one of only a handful of coaching schools in Australia that have ICF Accrediation (ACTP). To read our FAQ page for ICF Accreditation, click here.
As yet there is not currently Australian or European accreditation for coaching schools, apart from the ICF. We are currently preparing the paperwork to achieve accreditation with the VTAB and other government regulatory bodies in Australia.
» Is coaching like counseling?
- Coaching is not about how you came to be who you are; it is about helping your clients get from where they are now to a specific point in the future. It is therefore 100% focused on clients achieving their goals as quickly and easily as possible. One way of making a clear distinction would be to say that counselors are in the business of recovery , whereas coaches are in the business of development.
At the same time however, it is important to note that there are similarities between coaching and counseling Ð the process works similarly as both work one-to-one over a period of time. The skills are also similar as both require advanced questioning, listening and other communications skills.
» What are the challenges of coaching?
- Coaching is not a career for the fainthearted. It is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling career choices if you are passionate about human potential and making a difference in other lives. At the same time it can be extremely challenging as you are constantly required to be a model and living your life the way you want.
One of the biggest challenges coaches face is getting clients. This is why at Results Workplace Coaching we are committed to providing our coaches with the tools and support to help build their practices.
» How do Results Coaches work?
- Results Coaches typically work one-on-one with individual clients for a period of three months for one hour per week in person or on the telephone. During the first coaching consultation the Results Coach uses a sophisticated process to help the client set three goals in the three most important areas of their life. Ongoing sessions then provide structure, feedback, perspective and encouragement to assist the client to achieve their goals as quickly and easily as possible.
Coaching is a unique conversation that will examine closely what it will take to move the client towards the goals they've created. During each session the client will commit to taking actions for the following week. When meeting the client again, the coach discusses the obstacles faced and the insights gained as a result, then helps the client set new actions and develop new habits to achieve the results they want.
» What backgrounds do coaches typically come from
- Anyone can become a coach and coaches come from a variety of backgrounds. Typically however, the majority of coaches are coming from similar professions such as consulting, training, teaching or counselling. As coaching is for people who want to make a difference to other's lives, anyone who wishes to leverage their life and working experiences can become a coach.
» What goal areas do clients typically want to be coached on?
- There are many reasons that clients hire coaches. The most common goal areas clients want to see improvements in include finances, career performance, career direction and transition, communication skills, relationships and health.
